Inconsistent leadership is hindering your results

Effective leadership can transform team dynamics, create a culture of excellence, and fuel long-term success. Strong effective leaders are the grease that keeps a large organization moving forward. The challenge for many companies is the lack of consistency across leadership teams. High performance cannot be obtained when individual leaders ignore this important work. A business without an effective management system is a recipe for underperformance.

Inconsistency across the management team results in inconsistencies across the business and undermines business results.

What should you do?

An integrated management system ensures that the business can shape its future in a manner that optimally utilizes its resources, capabilities, and market opportunities. It provides a common framework and language for managerial leadership.

Case Study

A large international retailer prides itself on being an employer of choice. A strong management system supported employees at all levels and were given freedom to make decisions and learn from their mistakes as the company enjoyed rapid growth and large profits in an era when other retailers had gone out of business as consumers moved to online shopping. The Buying group in the 15,000 employee Canadian unit ensures that its retail stores across the country has the right merchandise its customers want to buy. To accomplish this, buyers travelled the world selecting the right items with their ideal customer in mind.

The business experienced significant disruption during the COVID pandemic which severely stressed the buying model. Buyers were prohibited to travel internationally disrupting their buying methods as they moved to online purchasing and demonstrated a propensity to hedge supply chain issues by buying too many goods. Centralized decision making was required to respond to the rapidly changing conditions on the ground, and the most senior executives were pulled into operational decision making as they addressed rolling store shutdowns from coast to coast, and supply chain disruption impacting the availability of merchandise to stock store shelves and management of inventory levels and available cash.

Once the pandemic was in everyone’s review mirror, the President set the expectation that operations would return to pre-Covid norms. A strong management system enabled the company to quickly return to pre-covid norms. Because roles had been well defined and documented with the right work defined at the right level, with commensurate decision authorities, it did not take long to reestablish those norms and pull the roles back up to the levels they should be operating at. A strong focus on employee development and succession ensured people had the capability and skills to fill vacant roles. The strong management system was foundational in ensuring that the business did not miss a beat as the post covid new normal took hold.
